Today I’m sharing my favorite 1st grade Halloween math games that are both low-prep and high-engagement. These games aren’t just fun—they’re aligned to key math standards like number sense, composing numbers, and problem-solving. Best of all, your students will hardly realize how much they’re learning while they play.

Batty Bingo

A Halloween twist on a classic! Kids already know how to play bingo, which makes this an instant can-do center. Students take turns drawing cards with numbers in different forms—standard form, expanded form, base 10, and unit form. Once they identify the number, they cover it on their playing mat. The first to get 5 in a row shouts “Batty Bingo!” and wins.

Why teachers love it: It’s an easy way to reinforce place value and number recognition with built-in fun.

Pumpkin Wars

(Not the kind you see on HGTV!) This game is all about comparing numbers in a hands-on way. Students spin a number for the tens place, build it with base 10 blocks, then spin for the ones place and build again. Once they’ve created their numbers, they compare to see who wins the “pumpkin battle.”

Why students love it: They get to build numbers physically, which makes abstract concepts like greater than/less than come to life.

Adding Tens & Bones

This spooky-themed game builds fluency with adding ones to groups of 10 (think 70 + 1 or 20 + 6). Kids love practicing with silly “bones” cards, and teachers love how it strengthens mental math skills.

Why it works: It’s quick, visual, and builds confidence with foundational addition.

Black Cat Composing

Forget boring worksheets—this game takes composing 10 to the next level. Students must use three addends to create 10 (for example, 4 + 5 + 1). The black cat twist makes them stretch their thinking and become flexible problem solvers.

Why it’s powerful: It pushes beyond memorization and builds number flexibility.

A Web of Words

One of my personal favorites! Students solve Halloween-themed word problems on whiteboards, either in small groups or centers. You can let them use their preferred strategies or guide them to practice specific ones.

Why it’s versatile: Perfect for differentiation—you can scaffold for students who need support or extend for those ready for a challenge.

Black Cat Bolt

We’ve been reviewing even and odd as well as place value.  Black Cat Bolt is a game where students alternate turns rolling a die and identifying if they are searching for a number with an even/odd number in the hundreds, tens, or ones place of a number.  With a little strategy added in, students try to get four numbers in a  row.  Easy prep, highly engaging, and we are building number sense!

Pumpkin Patch Number Puzzles

My kids this year have absolutely loved number puzzles.  I love that they are practicing adding and subtracting 10 and one more one less as well as a variety of other strategies to identify the missing numbers.  Pumpkin Patch Number Puzzles can easily be differentiated with the included cards that run 0-200, 201-400, 401-600, 601-800, and 801-1,000.

Frankensteven & Frankenstodd

With the next game we return to evens and odds, but with an addition and pattern hunting twist.  Students take turns grabbing a handful of our Franken-friends and identifying their number as even or odd.  After both have a turn, students add the numbers together and determine if the sum is even or odd.  Frankensteven & Frankenstodd builds awareness that when we add two odd numbers together the sum is even, when we add two even numbers together the sum is even, and when we add an even and odd number together the sum is odd.

My Mummy’s Money

Money.  I find this concept one of the most challenging to teach simply because students aren’t exposed to real money with the move towards debit cards.  My Mummy’s Money helps students get hands-on practice exchanging varying coins and bills.  Differentiate based on student needs with the included mats for Penny/Nickel/Dime, Penny/Dime/Dollar, and Nickel/Dime/Dollar.

Skeleton Sums

Mental math is a huge focus in Second Grade and Skeleton Sums is a favorite for continuing to build fluency.  With two included version, I love this game!  In the “Making 10” version students land on numbers and mentally determine the coordinating number that would equal 10.  In the “Doubles” version students land on numbers and mentally double the number.
