Picture this: it’s December in your classroom. Your students are full of energy, the excitement of the holidays is in full swing, and suddenly worksheets just aren’t cutting it anymore. That’s where winter math games 1st grade become a game-changing strategy. When learning feels playful and hands-on, students stay motivated, confident, and eager to engage — even during the busiest months of the year.

This time of year, students don’t just need practice — they need movement, novelty, and a sense of fun. That’s exactly why incorporating winter math activities into your December and January centers can make such a powerful difference. These activities help students review strategies you’ve been building all year, but in a way that feels new and exciting.

Why Winter Math Centers Work So Well in First Grade

Games bring structure, repetition, and strategy — but in a way that feels exciting. Instead of racing to finish worksheets, students:

build fluency through meaningful repetition
collaborate and self-correct using gameplay rules
take ownership of their learning
practice real 1st-grade strategies in context

Whether you use a traditional math workshop model or you’re building one, winter math centers give students the independence and confidence they need during a season when attention spans often get shorter.

And best of all? Once introduced, these games can be used again and again — making them perfect for December and January, when routines matter most.

What Skills Do These Winter Math Games Target?

These centers are aligned to 1st-grade standards and are intentionally designed to help students strengthen the strategies they’ll use all year. WinterMathGames1stGrade

Here are the skills practiced — plus how the game supports them through play:

Dashing to a Dollar — Recognizing Coins & Adding Mixed Money

Students roll a die, collect coins, trade up, and race to reach one dollar first. It’s a meaningful way to practice identifying coins, comparing values, and making real-world connections — all while playing competitively or cooperatively.

Students pull a card, identify the missing number in the skip-counting pattern, and move along the snowy path — with a few fun backward-move surprises along the way. It’s engaging repetition without feeling repetitive.

Students roll, spin, and use the counting-on strategy to move around the board collecting marshmallows. The built-in scaffolding supports mental math growth — and students love watching their mug fill as they play.

Students solve a doubles fact, then mentally add one more and cover the matching number on the board. This strategy helps move addition facts from counting to automatic recall, and the gameplay makes it feel rewarding instead of intimidating.

Students spin, count back 1, 2, or 3, and race to cover numbers in a three-in-a-row format. It’s the perfect way to build subtraction fluency while keeping the emotional climate low-pressure and playful.

How to Introduce These Games in Your Classroom

One of the biggest benefits of these winter math games is how quickly students learn to use them independently.

A simple routine works:

1⃣ Model the game whole-group
2⃣ Play a round together
3⃣ Release it into centers

Once introduced, these games are incredible for:

Math workshop rotations

Partner practice

Early finisher bins

Morning tubs

Intervention groups

Sub day plans

December AND January review

Students know exactly what to do, which means fewer interruptions and more time for meaningful small-group instruction.

Why Teachers Love These Winter Math Centers

Teachers who use these activities share the same feedback again and again:

“Students stay engaged longer.”
“The prep is quick and easy.”
“It makes December learning manageable.”

And honestly? That’s exactly what we need during this time of year.

No complicated prep.
No reteaching directions every day.
Just meaningful math practice disguised as fun.

Winter math Games 1st grade – Ready to Make Winter Math Easier?

If you’re looking for winter math activities for 1st grade that bring joy, independence, and real skill-building to your math block, you’ll love having these ready to go.

Whether you use them before winter break or keep them rolling into January, these games make practice feel playful — while still aligning to the standards that matter.

Click below to take a closer look and grab them for your classroom:

It’s the time of year where you might be wondering what to get those on your list for the holidays. Whether you are a teacher looking at options for student gifts or a parent trying to decide what to get your child’s teacher, this guide will hopefully serve as a inspiration for you.

Before we jump into the guides, let’s note one thing. It is not necessary nor required to get your students or your child’s teacher(s) gifts for the holidays. This is simply meant to be a guide for those that plan on doing so.

Let’s kick off the guides with the teacher gift guide!

If there’s one thing every kindergarten teacher knows… December learning hits different.

Between holiday excitement, schedule changes, themed dress-up days, and the countdown to winter break, attention spans become short — and the need for movement and engagement becomes very real.

This is where winter math games become your December superpower.

Instead of handing out one more worksheet or trying to keep students engaged at the carpet for long stretches, you give them hands-on winter math activities that feel like play — but actually reinforce the exact standards you’re teaching.

And the best part?
Students stay engaged.
They stay independent.
They stay excited to learn.

That’s when math starts to click — and confidence grows.

Why Winter Math Centers Are a Game Changer

Games make repetition meaningful.
Games increase engagement.
Games unlock independence.

Kindergarteners need movement, hands-on practice, and time to explore concepts — not just watch them modeled. Winter math centers give them a way to practice skills again and again, but in a format that stays fresh.

Instead of:

✘ rushing to finish worksheets
✘ practicing skills once and moving on
✘ repeating the same task in the same format

…students experience math in a way that feels fun, purposeful, and connected.

What Skills Do These Winter Math Activities Cover?

These themed winter math games are designed to reinforce foundational kindergarten standards — and each one is intentionally aligned to CCSS and TEKS. Students practice big skills they’ll use all year:

Counting

One-to-one correspondence

Subitizing

Addition & subtraction

Comparing numbers

Composing & decomposing 10

2D shape recognition

Skip counting by 10s

And the best part? Each skill is practiced through play.

Here’s how the games work:

Frosty Numbers (Subitizing)

Students use a spinner with ten-frames and try to get four in a row on the game board. They practice subitizing, number recognition, and counting — without needing worksheets or flash cards.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="400" height="286" src="https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Slide05.png" alt="Frosty Numbers winter math game for kindergarten where students practice subitizing using ten frames on a themed board.
One student hides part of a set under a cup while the other student discovers the missing part and records the equation. It’s hands-on algebra foundations in the most kid-friendly format imaginable.

Students use a spinner to add or subtract evergreen trees until one player lands on exactly zero — making addition and subtraction meaningful, visual, and FUN.

Students identify and cover matching coins — using either printed pieces or real coins. Even if money isn’t fully taught in your pacing guide, this gives students exposure and readiness for later grades.

Students draw a domino, add the quantities, and compare their total to their partner’s, just like the classic game “War.” It’s a fast-paced way to build subitizing skills, number sense, and understanding of greater and less than through play.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="400" height="286" src="https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Slide10.png" alt="Holiday Domino War kindergarten winter math center where students add dots on dominoes and compare numbers to determine the greater value.

Every game builds math fluency while developing problem-solving, strategy, and flexible thinking — skills that stretch far beyond December.

How to Introduce and Use These Winter Math Games

You only need one strategy to make winter math centers run smoothly:

Teach one game whole-group before placing it in centers.

A quick model with the class watching (or even competing against you!) gives structure so students know:

how to play

how to take turns

how to clean up

how to work independently or with a partner

Once they’ve learned the structure, the magic happens:

They actually know what to do.
They stay engaged longer.
They interrupt less.

That means you finally get space to teach small groups with fewer distractions.

When Can You Use These Winter Math Activities?

These centers work beautifully for:

Guided math stations

Morning tubs

Early finisher bins

Intervention groups

Partner practice

Sub tubs

Home connection games

Basically — anywhere you need a no-stress, high-engagement, meaningful math option.

What Teachers Are Saying

Teachers who use these winter math games describe them as:

“Fun, hands-on, and so easy to prep.”
“Perfect for December when students need movement and novelty.”
“A lifesaver for centers — especially right before winter break.”

And honestly? That’s exactly the energy we need this time of year.

Want Winter Math Games That Practically Run Themselves?

If you’re looking for winter math activities for kindergarten that are easy to prep, meaningful to use, and exciting for students — these games will become a yearly go-to.

Your students will learn through play.

You’ll finally get breathing room during math.

I hope everyone is enjoying their winter break! I don’t know about y’all, but I would be totally lost without these 2 weeks off! It’s such a fantastic time to recharge and hit the road hard in January with a refreshed mindset.

That, and it’s the perfect time to travel!

Speaking of travel, I wanted to share a bit of our vacation to Breckenridge and Denver last week. When we took our trip to Mexico this summer I felt like I took literally NO pictures, so I made sure to take plenty this round!

For some reason we chose to leave on Friday evening, just a few hours after school got out… That led to inherent CRAZINESS with trying to get home, packed (because I always do it last minute), and to the airport. This is our 2 suitcases, backpack, and tote bag BEFORE we called a friend to borrow another suitcase to separate some of the stuff from the large suitcase. No one needs to pay heavy bag fees…

Unfortunately the craziness didn’t end with packing… Our flight was delayed (many, many times) totaling 3 hours. The flight before us that was also headed to Denver was also delayed 3 hours – so we thought maybe we could get on standby for the earlier flight. We waited, and waited, and actually made it onto the earlier flight!

Our happy dance onto the airplane was short lived, though. We got on to find that the 2 seats we were given were already occupied. Come to find out the scanner had not read the 2 tickets for those passengers making them think they actually had open seats. So we un-happily danced right back off the plane.

Due to the delay we were going to also miss our shuttle from Denver to Breckenridge, and of course they couldn’t get us on another shuttle until mid-day the following day. Missing a day of skiing was NOT in our cards, so we were fortunately able to cancel the shuttle and rent a car.

Once all of this mess was out of the way it was time for our fantastic trip!

While we were in Breckenridge there was a winter storm for about a day and a half which totaled 24 inches of snow! You may say UGH, but I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the snow and it made for some awesome skiing!

To assist in keeping somewhat warm, we may have stopped <strike>once</strike> several times on the slopes throughout the trip for hot chocolate with a “spirited” peppermint addition! YUM!

This may have also given me the extra little courage to go down my first black diamond runs! For those who don’t know, a “green” is beginner, a “blue” is intermediate, and a “black” is advanced. This was only my second time skiing, but I was determined to go down a black and not totally wipe out!

By the 3rd day we were only doing black diamond runs. It was a GREAT workout and super fun! Certainly helped to solidify my desire to move to the mountains!

Anyway, that’s about it for the ski portion of the trip (minus the great food – but somehow I didn’t manage to get any pictures of it), so here’s some random scenery pics as we headed down the mountain to Denver!

The view while driving is just breathtaking!

Once we got to Denver we spent time with the mister’s parents and family. They are super fun to be around! (Again, I ended up not getting a ton of pictures while in Denver…) However, I did manage to snag this lovely photo.

If you can’t tell, that is a blanket wrapped around a tree! I guess it was cold? Completely random, I know, but I couldn’t resist getting photo evidence of this!

My favorite picture of the trip happened on our second to last day on the trip. We went with Dustin’s uncle, aunt, and cousins to a small mountain town to have lunch and take a train ride through the mountains.

It’s pretty awesome – even with Dustin’s uncle photobombing!

Well I think that’s about it for this trip. I’m feeling like I did a much better job snagging pictures this go round.

Only a few days of winter break left, and I plan on being super lazy!

AND, I almost forgot! I am throwing a sale in my [TpT store] from today until January 1st! You can head over and get a 15% discount off of everything! You can visit my store by clicking [HERE].

This week we had our district-wide STEAM challenge. This was my first experience with STEAM, and I have some mixed feelings about it. I LOVE the idea and the type of thinking/reasoning it can help students develop, but there are definitely some modifications I would like to make before we try it again. Our district had us build background for one day on towers (not long enough in my opinion) and then complete the challenge the next day. I think the kiddos would be more successful if the challenge tied into the current curriculum or we had longer to build background. But, as I said it was a fun experience and the kids loved it!

We started out our research day with a guest speaker (the mister) coming in to do a lesson on what towers are.

The kiddos had some time to practice building towers out of blocks. We watched the Cat in the Hat “Termite Towers” to help come to the conclusion that our towers needed a bigger base and some kind of tape/glue/etc. to help them not fall over.

The day of the actual challenge each group was given 50 Dixie cups, 92 cm of tape, and scissors. This is when it really hit me that we needed more time researching towers and having hands-on experiences making them out of different things.

We made these super simple plate turkeys on Monday during our “Rockstar Behavior” party. The kiddos with great behavior of the last 6-weeks were invited to the party. I love these because the only thing you need are paper plates, water color paints (or crayons/markers), googly eyes, and orange construction paper. So simple and the kids loved it!

We are finishing up this cornucopia craftivity today. I believe the original patterns came from Teacher Created Resources. Now that the fruits have dried after painting, the kiddos are going to cut them out and glue them to the cornucopias. One of my favorite things this week has been trying to teach the little ones to pronounce “cornucopia,” it’s too cute!

I feel like this whole post has been super craft-oriented… but here’s one more! This one is a math activity from my [Thanksgiving No Prep Packet]. We moved onto addition this week, but I still wanted a little review for counting/number identification.

And with that I am off to have a great day with my little ones! I hope you have a great Friday, and if today is your last day until December – Happy Thanksgiving Break, if you still have some days next week – keep pushing and Happy Friday!

Y’all, Halloween is literally in 9 days!! Ahhh!

Today’s [Wordless Wednesday] post is in honor of Halloween and has absolutely nothing to do with teaching. We all deserve some fun away from the classroom, right?

As you may know, I have been out of the classroom for the last couple of weeks… You can read more about that [here]. During my brief time off, the mister and I decided our house was finally ready to host one of our neighborhood functions. So needless to say I had a bit of time on my hands to get ready for our neighborhood’s wine crawl this past Saturday.

We’re happy we finally made the leap to host so many people over (there was a little over 30 people who came!). It was a ton of fun and can’t wait to do it again. What is your favorite thing to do for Halloween?
