<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If kindergarten reading intervention feels harder than it should, you’re not imagining it.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Between RTI blocks, MTSS expectations, and students entering your room with wildly different literacy needs, small group reading intervention can quickly become the most overwhelming part of the day — even for experienced teachers.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You know what your students need.<br>The challenge is figuring out <strong>how to deliver targeted phonics instruction</strong> to multiple learners <em>at the same time</em> without drowning in prep.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Let’s talk about how to make kindergarten reading intervention feel more manageable — and more effective.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Why Reading Intervention in Kindergarten Feels So Hard</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In one small group, you might have:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>A student still working on beginning sounds</li>

<li>Another blending CVC words</li>

<li>Another confusing digraphs</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And yet… they’re all sitting at the same table.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Most reading intervention activities assume:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Everyone needs the same skill</li>

<li>You’ll prep a separate activity for each student</li>

<li>You have unlimited time to organize materials</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>That’s just not real life.</strong></p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A Quick Win You Can Use Tomorrow</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Before we talk systems, here’s a <strong>quick win</strong> you can try immediately:</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/1f449.png" alt="👉" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> Stop planning by <em>group</em> — plan by <em>skill</em>.</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Instead of saying:</p>

<blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow">
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“This is my lowest reading group.”</p>
</blockquote>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Try asking:</p>

<blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow">
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“What skill does <em>each student</em> need right now?”</p>
</blockquote>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When you plan reading intervention by skill:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Instruction becomes clearer</li>

<li>Students feel more successful</li>

<li>Behavior improves because work actually fits their needs</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The problem?<br>Most teachers don’t have a way to <em>manage</em> that level of differentiation.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>That’s where a system matters</strong>.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What Effective Small Group Reading Intervention Really Needs</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Strong kindergarten reading intervention should be:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Phonics-based</strong> (foundational skills first) or <strong>phonological awareness-based</strong></li>

<li><strong>Targeted</strong> (not one-size-fits-all)</li>

<li><strong>Easy to differentiate</strong></li>

<li><strong>Low-prep</strong> so you can focus on teaching, not laminating</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When those pieces come together, small groups stop feeling chaotic — and start feeling purposeful.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A Binder-Based Approach to Reading Intervention</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>One of the simplest ways to streamline small group reading intervention is to keep everything in one organized place</strong>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A binder system allows you to:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Pull exactly the skill each student needs</li>

<li>Work with multiple skills in the same group</li>

<li>Avoid printing and re-printing materials</li>

<li>Reuse activities with dry erase markers or digitally</li>
</ul>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Kindergarten-Reading-Intervention-Small-Group-Phonics-Intervention-Activities-1728973?utm_source=T3%20Blog&amp;utm_campaign=Kindergarten%20Reading%20Intervention%20post" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Reading-Intervention-Kindergarten-The-Teaching-Texan-01-1024x683.jpg" alt="Kindergarten reading intervention activities" class="wp-image-47091" srcset="https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Reading-Intervention-Kindergarten-The-Teaching-Texan-01-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Reading-Intervention-Kindergarten-The-Teaching-Texan-01-300x200.jpg 300w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Reading-Intervention-Kindergarten-The-Teaching-Texan-01-768x512.jpg 768w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Reading-Intervention-Kindergarten-The-Teaching-Texan-01-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Reading-Intervention-Kindergarten-The-Teaching-Texan-01-2048x1365.jpg 2048w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Reading-Intervention-Kindergarten-The-Teaching-Texan-01-1200x800.jpg 1200w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Reading-Intervention-Kindergarten-The-Teaching-Texan-01-75x50.jpg 75w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Reading-Intervention-Kindergarten-The-Teaching-Texan-01-100x67.jpg 100w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Reading-Intervention-Kindergarten-The-Teaching-Texan-01-125x83.jpg 125w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Reading-Intervention-Kindergarten-The-Teaching-Texan-01-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Instead of scrambling for materials, you’re able to focus on:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Listening to students read</li>

<li>Giving corrective feedback</li>

<li>Noticing patterns and growth</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That’s where real intervention happens.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Why Phonics Must Be the Foundation</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In kindergarten, phonics intervention activities aren’t optional — they’re essential.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Strong reading intervention focuses on:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Phonological awareness</li>

<li>Letter-sound relationships</li>

<li>Blending and segmenting</li>

<li>High-frequency words</li>

<li>Early decoding skills</li>
</ul>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Kindergarten-Reading-Intervention-Small-Group-Phonics-Intervention-Activities-1728973?utm_source=T3%20Blog&amp;utm_campaign=Kindergarten%20Reading%20Intervention%20post" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Reading-Intervention-Kindergarten-The-Teaching-Texan-09-1024x683.jpg" alt="Phonics reading intervention practice for kindergarten" class="wp-image-47092" srcset="https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Reading-Intervention-Kindergarten-The-Teaching-Texan-09-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Reading-Intervention-Kindergarten-The-Teaching-Texan-09-300x200.jpg 300w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Reading-Intervention-Kindergarten-The-Teaching-Texan-09-768x512.jpg 768w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Reading-Intervention-Kindergarten-The-Teaching-Texan-09-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Reading-Intervention-Kindergarten-The-Teaching-Texan-09-2048x1365.jpg 2048w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Reading-Intervention-Kindergarten-The-Teaching-Texan-09-1200x800.jpg 1200w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Reading-Intervention-Kindergarten-The-Teaching-Texan-09-75x50.jpg 75w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Reading-Intervention-Kindergarten-The-Teaching-Texan-09-100x67.jpg 100w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Reading-Intervention-Kindergarten-The-Teaching-Texan-09-125x83.jpg 125w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Reading-Intervention-Kindergarten-The-Teaching-Texan-09-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When phonics is the anchor:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Students gain confidence</li>

<li>Reading starts to click</li>

<li>Intervention time becomes more productive</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Any kindergarten reading intervention system worth using needs to make phonics instruction <strong>easy to access and easy to differentiate</strong>.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Making Differentiation Possible (Without Chaos)</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Here’s the reality:</p>

<blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow">
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Just because students sit together doesn’t mean they should or need to work on the same thing.</p>
</blockquote>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">An effective kindergarten reading intervention setup allows:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>One student to work on rhyming</li>

<li>Another to practice blending</li>

<li>Another to reinforce vowel sounds</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">All at the same table.<br>All at the same time.<br>Without confusion.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That’s what turns intervention from stressful to sustainable.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A Go-To Resource for Kindergarten Reading Intervention</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is exactly why I created my <strong><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Kindergarten-Reading-Intervention-Small-Group-Phonics-Intervention-Activities-1728973?utm_source=T3%20Blog&amp;utm_campaign=Kindergarten%20Reading%20Intervention%20post" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kindergarten Reading Intervention Binder</a></strong>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Not as another activity — but as a <strong>go-to system</strong> for:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Small group reading intervention</li>

<li>Phonics-based support</li>

<li>RTI and MTSS blocks</li>

<li>Teachers who want targeted instruction without endless prep</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">With both <strong>printable and Google Slides versions</strong>, it’s designed to work in real classrooms with real constraints.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">With that said&#8230;</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Reading intervention in kindergarten doesn’t need to feel overwhelming.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">With:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Clear skill targets</li>

<li>A phonics-first approach</li>

<li>And a simple system to manage differentiation</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You can spend less time prepping — and more time teaching.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There’s something special about winter in kindergarten. The energy is high, the routines feel a little wobbly, and teachers are balancing excitement with the desire to keep learning meaningful (and some days just pushing towards break!). When attention spans are short and the wiggles are real, the search for activities that <em>actually engage students</em> becomes even more important.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That’s why I love using a kindergarten reindeer unit during this part of the year. It’s fun, high-interest, and full of opportunities to connect literacy, vocabulary, science, writing, and centers into one smooth, cohesive learning experience. And because kids are genuinely interested in reindeer (come on Santa&#8230;), this theme practically hooks them for you.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Let me walk you through what this kindergarten reindeer unit looks like in our classroom — and why it makes such a difference during the winter months.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Start With Curiosity: Building Background Knowledge Together</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One of the biggest challenges in December and January is channeling student excitement into something productive. Starting the week with nonfiction about reindeer works like magic because it gives students something real to latch onto.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They’re fascinated.<br>They’re asking questions.<br>They’re sharing observations you didn’t expect.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/All-About-Reindeer-Activities-Kindergarten-Writing-Reading-and-Math-Centers-10441733?utm_source=T3%20Blog&amp;utm_campaign=Reindeer%20Unit%20Blog%20Post" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="512" src="https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/1-1-1024x512.png" alt="Kindergarten reindeer unit nonfiction activity building background knowledge and engaging students with real reindeer facts." class="wp-image-46997" srcset="https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/1-1-1024x512.png 1024w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/1-1-300x150.png 300w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/1-1-768x384.png 768w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/1-1-1536x768.png 1536w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/1-1-2048x1024.png 2048w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/1-1-75x38.png 75w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/1-1-100x50.png 100w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/1-1-125x63.png 125w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/1-1-600x300.png 600w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This curiosity becomes the foundation for everything else we do. Even your most distractible learners suddenly have an anchor — a topic that feels new, cozy, and worth exploring.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And that’s really the power of a reindeer theme: it sparks interest instantly, which makes <em>every other skill</em> easier to teach.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Literacy That Feels Like Discovery, Not Work</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Winter is a tricky time for literacy instruction. Students need routine, but they also need something engaging enough to break through the seasonal wiggles.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This reindeer unit makes literacy feel like a shared investigation. Through read-alouds, discussion, labeling, and vocabulary activities, students begin talking like little scientists — using words like <em>herd</em>, <em>antlers</em>, <em>adaptations</em>, and <em>Arctic</em> with complete confidence.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">What I notice every year:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Students stay on task longer</li>

<li>They retain the vocabulary because they use it over and over</li>

<li>Even hesitant speakers participate more</li>

<li>Writing becomes easier because they have words and ideas ready to go</li>
</ul>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/All-About-Reindeer-Activities-Kindergarten-Writing-Reading-and-Math-Centers-10441733?utm_source=T3%20Blog&amp;utm_campaign=Reindeer%20Unit%20Blog%20Post" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="512" src="https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/2-1-1024x512.png" alt="Reindeer activities for kindergarten that support literacy development through vocabulary, oral language, and nonfiction exploration." class="wp-image-46998" srcset="https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/2-1-1024x512.png 1024w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/2-1-300x150.png 300w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/2-1-768x384.png 768w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/2-1-1536x768.png 1536w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/2-1-2048x1024.png 2048w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/2-1-75x38.png 75w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/2-1-100x50.png 100w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/2-1-125x63.png 125w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/2-1-600x300.png 600w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It’s not “holiday learning.” It’s meaningful literacy wrapped in a theme kids love.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Centers That Students Can Actually Do Independently</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Here’s the truth: winter centers can feel chaotic if the activities require too much teacher support.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But reindeer-themed centers? Different story.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Because everything ties back to the same big idea, students already have the context and confidence they need to work independently. Whether they’re sorting vocabulary, completing literacy tasks, or exploring early math skills, the theme keeps them focused.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Teachers tell me all the time:</p>

<blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow">
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“These centers run smoother than anything else I do in December.”</p>
</blockquote>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And that’s exactly why a reindeer unit belongs in the winter lineup — it gives you <em>ready-to-go activities that maintain structure</em> on days when you really need it.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/All-About-Reindeer-Activities-Kindergarten-Writing-Reading-and-Math-Centers-10441733?utm_source=T3%20Blog&amp;utm_campaign=Reindeer%20Unit%20Blog%20Post" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="512" src="https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/3-1-1024x512.png" alt="Kindergarten reindeer activities used in literacy and math centers to encourage independent, engaging winter learning." class="wp-image-46999" srcset="https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/3-1-1024x512.png 1024w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/3-1-300x150.png 300w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/3-1-768x384.png 768w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/3-1-1536x768.png 1536w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/3-1-2048x1024.png 2048w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/3-1-75x38.png 75w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/3-1-100x50.png 100w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/3-1-125x63.png 125w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/3-1-600x300.png 600w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Writing With Purpose (and Without Tears!)</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Writing can be tough this time of year if students don’t feel connected to the topic. But once your class has spent a few days learning about reindeer, something shifts.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Suddenly they have:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Background knowledge</li>

<li>Vocabulary</li>

<li>Visuals and examples</li>

<li>Confidence</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This means their writing isn’t forced — it feels natural.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Some share facts, others write descriptive sentences, and some draw detailed pictures to go with their ideas. No matter the level, every student finds an entry point that feels doable and exciting.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/All-About-Reindeer-Activities-Kindergarten-Writing-Reading-and-Math-Centers-10441733?utm_source=T3%20Blog&amp;utm_campaign=Reindeer%20Unit%20Blog%20Post" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="512" src="https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/4-1-1024x512.png" alt="Kindergarten reindeer writing activity helping students use vocabulary and nonfiction knowledge to create meaningful winter writing." class="wp-image-47000" srcset="https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/4-1-1024x512.png 1024w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/4-1-300x150.png 300w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/4-1-768x384.png 768w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/4-1-1536x768.png 1536w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/4-1-2048x1024.png 2048w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/4-1-75x38.png 75w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/4-1-100x50.png 100w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/4-1-125x63.png 125w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/4-1-600x300.png 600w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Creative Moments That Bring Calm to the Classroom</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One of the sweetest parts of this <strong>kindergarten reindeer unit</strong> is how it incorporates creative opportunities that double as quiet, focused work time.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Activities like drawing, labeling, and hands-on tasks create a sense of classroom calm that’s often hard to come by in winter. The room settles. Kids concentrate. You can breathe.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/All-About-Reindeer-Activities-Kindergarten-Writing-Reading-and-Math-Centers-10441733?utm_source=T3%20Blog&amp;utm_campaign=Reindeer%20Unit%20Blog%20Post" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="512" src="https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/5-1024x512.png" alt="Reindeer directed drawing and creative kindergarten activities that support fine motor development and focused winter learning." class="wp-image-47001" srcset="https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/5-1024x512.png 1024w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/5-300x150.png 300w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/5-768x384.png 768w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/5-1536x768.png 1536w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/5-2048x1024.png 2048w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/5-75x38.png 75w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/5-100x50.png 100w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/5-125x63.png 125w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/5-600x300.png 600w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It’s the perfect balance of fun + purpose.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Why Teachers Love Using a Reindeer Unit in Winter</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This theme works because it solves real classroom problems:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Students stay engaged even with high winter energy</li>

<li>Lessons feel connected instead of fragmented</li>

<li>Prep is minimal during an already busy season</li>

<li>Activities support literacy, vocabulary, writing, science, and centers</li>

<li>It works beautifully in December or January</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And for students?<br>It feels like learning wrapped in wonder.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Looking for Reindeer Activities That Make Winter Teaching Easier?</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If small-group reading feels like a juggling act, you’re not alone. The hardest part isn’t the teaching—it’s knowing <strong>exactly where to start</strong> with each child.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The good news? With a simple, Science of Reading-aligned placement, you can group students by <strong>shared skill needs</strong> (not reading levels), plan faster, and see growth sooner.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Why group by skill (not levels)?</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Science of Reading guidance is clear: effective small-group instruction targets the specific skills students haven’t mastered yet—phoneme-grapheme mapping, decoding patterns, and fluent application—so practice is precise and progress is visible. Grouping by <strong>shared skill deficit</strong> streamlines planning and accelerates results.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The 10-minute placement system (K–2)</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I built a <strong>free Phonics Placement Screener</strong> that takes about 2–4 minutes per student and gives you instant clarity on where to begin instruction. Here’s the quick flow:</p>

<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Screen 1:1</strong> with a clean student page (no directions on their side—less overwhelm).</li>

<li><strong>Follow simple stop rules</strong> to find each child’s “just-right” band (CVC → Blends → Digraphs → Silent e → R-controlled → Double final consonants → Soft c/g → Trigraphs → Suffixes Pt. 1 → Vowel Teams → Diphthongs → Suffixes Pt. 2).</li>

<li><strong>Record placement immediately</strong> on the summary sheet so you can sort students into groups by skill.</li>
</ol>

<figure class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image46311_5eb1e5-10 size-large"><a href="https://info.theteachingtexan.com/phonicsscreener" class="kb-advanced-image-link"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="512" src="https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Phonics-Screener-Post-1024x512.png" alt="" class="kb-img wp-image-46317" srcset="https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Phonics-Screener-Post-1024x512.png 1024w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Phonics-Screener-Post-300x150.png 300w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Phonics-Screener-Post-768x384.png 768w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Phonics-Screener-Post-1536x768.png 1536w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Phonics-Screener-Post-75x38.png 75w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Phonics-Screener-Post-100x50.png 100w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Phonics-Screener-Post-125x63.png 125w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Phonics-Screener-Post-600x300.png 600w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Phonics-Screener-Post.png 2000w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The result: a clear starting point for every learner, without a marathon assessment block.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What to do with the data</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Placement is only powerful if it leads to instruction. This is where so many systems fall short—teachers end up with scores but no roadmap. Here’s the bridge:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Start small groups at the placed skill.</strong> If a student placed at “Blends,” that’s your first target for decoding and application.</li>

<li><strong>Use decodable readers that match the skill.</strong> Decodables let kids apply the exact pattern they’re learning, which strengthens orthographic mapping and confidence. </li>

<li><strong>Reinforce with centers.</strong> While you teach the target skill in small group, centers provide meaningful, independent practice on that same skill (not random busywork).</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Once your groups are placed, use my step-by-step plan for small-group structured literacy: <strong><a href="https://theteachingtexan.com/how-to-plan-small-group-structured-literacy-with-developing-readers/">How to Plan Small Group Structured Literacy with Developing Readers</a></strong>.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A peek at the routine</h2>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Mini warm-up:</strong> brief sound or blending review.</li>

<li><strong>Targeted decoding:</strong> words/sentences using the placed pattern.</li>

<li><strong>Application in connected text:</strong> a <strong>decodable</strong> that aligns with the skill.</li>

<li><strong>Quick check:</strong> note accuracy; move forward when students read 4–5/5 on two checks.</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This structure mirrors what SoR publishers and literacy orgs outline for explicit, systematic small-group work—only it’s streamlined for real classrooms.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How often should I monitor progress?</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Use the included progress-monitoring word lists inside your <a href="https://info.theteachingtexan.com/phonicsscreener">free phonics screener</a> for the current skill only. When a student reads <strong>4 or 5 words correctly</strong> across <strong>two different</strong> checks, move them to the next skill. (You’ll love how tidy your groups become when the placement and progress tools work together.)</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">FAQs (fast)</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Do I have to screen everyone?</strong><br>Yes—but just once. It takes minutes and pays off in weeks of targeted instruction.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>What about phonological awareness?</strong><br>If a student struggles at CVC, preview blending orally before reteaching phonics patterns. (Keep it quick—your goal is decoding placement, not a full PA battery.)</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>How many groups?</strong><br>As few as you can manage while keeping skills tight. Combine students who share the same placed skill, even if their “levels” differ.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Real teacher wins</h2>

<blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow">
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“My groups finally make sense. I’m teaching what they actually need, and I’m seeing weekly progress.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ever feel like your students are <em>almost</em> there with reading—but they still guess at words, skip over sounds, or struggle to read with confidence?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You’ve modeled. You’ve practiced. You’ve tried all the fun voices and finger tracking with all sorts of cute manipulatives… but they’re still stuck in the “guess and go” phase.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If that’s sounding a little <em>too</em> familiar, you’re not alone—and you’re definitely not failing your students. The truth is, decoding and accuracy aren’t about tricks or guessing strategies. They’re about giving kids the tools to connect <strong>sound to symbol</strong> in a systematic, meaningful way.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And today? We’re digging into 3 ways to strengthen decoding and accuracy in K-2 readers that <em>actually work</em>—and that won’t add 10 more things to your never-ending to-do list.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">1. Build a Strong Foundation with Phonological Awareness &amp; Systematic Phonics</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>(Hello, Science of Reading!)</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Before kids can decode, they have to be able to <em>hear</em> the sounds in words. Phonological awareness skills like rhyming, syllable counting, isolating beginning and ending sounds, and blending phonemes form the foundation for future reading success.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="2560" height="1707" src="https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Guided-Writing-The-Teaching-Texan-1-edited-scaled.jpg" alt="small group phonological awareness activity in kindergarten" class="wp-image-45085" srcset="https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Guided-Writing-The-Teaching-Texan-1-edited-scaled.jpg 2560w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Guided-Writing-The-Teaching-Texan-1-edited-300x200.jpg 300w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Guided-Writing-The-Teaching-Texan-1-edited-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Guided-Writing-The-Teaching-Texan-1-edited-768x512.jpg 768w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Guided-Writing-The-Teaching-Texan-1-edited-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Guided-Writing-The-Teaching-Texan-1-edited-2048x1365.jpg 2048w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Guided-Writing-The-Teaching-Texan-1-edited-1200x800.jpg 1200w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Guided-Writing-The-Teaching-Texan-1-edited-75x50.jpg 75w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Guided-Writing-The-Teaching-Texan-1-edited-100x67.jpg 100w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Guided-Writing-The-Teaching-Texan-1-edited-125x83.jpg 125w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Guided-Writing-The-Teaching-Texan-1-edited-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Once those ears are trained, it’s time to connect those sounds to letters through <strong>explicit, systematic phonics instruction.</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><br>That means teaching:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>One phonics skill at a time (not all the patterns all at once)</li>

<li>With clear modeling and scaffolded practice</li>

<li>Using words and texts that align with what you’ve taught</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is where you want to lean into structured routines and repeatable activities. No need for fluff—your students thrive when they know what to expect, and you’ll feel confident knowing your instruction is grounded in research.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/1f4dd.png" alt="📝" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> Want to go deeper? <hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">2. Use Decodable Texts and Chunking to Reinforce Accuracy</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you’ve ever wondered <em>why</em> a student can decode a word on a flashcard but not in a sentence—it’s probably because they haven’t had enough opportunities to practice in connected text that <strong>matches what they’ve been taught.</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That’s where <strong>decodable readers</strong> come in. These texts are written using words that follow specific phonics patterns so students can practice applying what they know.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/1f449.png" alt="👉" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> When you pair decodable text with <strong>chunking strategies</strong> (like looking for digraphs, glued sounds, or base words), you give students the confidence and tools to decode accurately—without relying on pictures or guessing.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="512" src="https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/3-Ways-to-Strengthen-Decoding-and-Accuracy-in-K–2-Readers-Blog-Post-1-1024x512.png" alt="Decodable text marked with chunks for improved decoding accuracy" class="wp-image-45090" srcset="https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/3-Ways-to-Strengthen-Decoding-and-Accuracy-in-K–2-Readers-Blog-Post-1-1024x512.png 1024w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/3-Ways-to-Strengthen-Decoding-and-Accuracy-in-K–2-Readers-Blog-Post-1-300x150.png 300w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/3-Ways-to-Strengthen-Decoding-and-Accuracy-in-K–2-Readers-Blog-Post-1-768x384.png 768w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/3-Ways-to-Strengthen-Decoding-and-Accuracy-in-K–2-Readers-Blog-Post-1-1536x768.png 1536w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/3-Ways-to-Strengthen-Decoding-and-Accuracy-in-K–2-Readers-Blog-Post-1-75x38.png 75w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/3-Ways-to-Strengthen-Decoding-and-Accuracy-in-K–2-Readers-Blog-Post-1-100x50.png 100w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/3-Ways-to-Strengthen-Decoding-and-Accuracy-in-K–2-Readers-Blog-Post-1-125x63.png 125w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/3-Ways-to-Strengthen-Decoding-and-Accuracy-in-K–2-Readers-Blog-Post-1-600x300.png 600w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/3-Ways-to-Strengthen-Decoding-and-Accuracy-in-K–2-Readers-Blog-Post-1.png 2000w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Try this with your readers:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Highlight or circle chunks before reading</li>

<li>Tap out sounds with fingers or manipulatives</li>

<li>Reread decodable sentences to build fluency</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This isn’t just busy work—it’s targeted, brain-friendly practice that builds automaticity over time.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/1f4dd.png" alt="📝" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> Related post you’ll love: <a href="https://theteachingtexan.com/easy-strategies-to-build-reading-fluency/" data-type="link" data-id="https://theteachingtexan.com/easy-strategies-to-build-reading-fluency/">Reading Fluency: 3 Surprisingly Easy Strategies</a></p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">3. Practice, Practice, Practice—with Blending Slides that Actually Work</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Here’s the part where everything clicks <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2728.png" alt="✨" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Decoding and accuracy improve with exposure—but not just <em>any</em> exposure. Kids need repeated opportunities to decode <strong>in isolation</strong> <em>before</em> jumping into full texts. That’s why I created these <strong><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Blending-Slides-Decoding-Practice-BUNDLE-Science-of-Reading-Aligned-Phonics-14138010" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Blending Slides</a></strong>—to make sound-by-sound decoding both structured <em>and</em> fun.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Today, we&#8217;re exploring the exciting world of reading fluency. Fluent readers can read text accurately, quickly, and with proper expression. Fluency is a critical bridge between word recognition and comprehension, ensuring that students can not only decode words but also understand and enjoy what they read.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Whether you&#8217;re teaching PreK, Kindergarten, or First Grade, these strategies will help your young learners develop the fluency they need for reading success. And, before you dive into these fluency tips, make sure you check out our recent posts on <a href="https://theteachingtexan.com/powerful-phonological-awareness-activities/">phonological awareness</a> and <a href="https://theteachingtexan.com/phonics-instruction-and-early-literacy/">phonics</a>.</p>

</div>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Why is Fluency Important?</h1>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Improves Comprehension:</strong> Fluent readers can focus on understanding the text rather than decoding each word.</li>

<li><strong>Boosts Confidence:</strong> Students who read fluently feel more confident and motivated to read.</li>

<li><strong>Enhances Enjoyment:</strong> When reading is smooth and expressive, it becomes more enjoyable for students.</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Let’s dive into three actionable strategies you can implement in your classroom to build reading fluency!</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">1. Repeated Reading for building reading fluency</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Repeated reading</strong> is a powerful strategy where students read the same text multiple times until they achieve a level of fluency. This practice helps students improve their speed, accuracy, and expression.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Activity:</strong> <strong>Echo Reading</strong></p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Materials Needed:</strong> A selection of short, engaging texts or passages.</li>

<li><strong>Instructions:</strong>
<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li>Choose a short text appropriate for your students’ reading level.</li>

<li>Read the text aloud while students follow along with their copies.</li>

<li>Have students echo read by repeating each sentence or phrase after you.</li>

<li>Repeat this process until students can read the text fluently on their own.</li>
</ol>
</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Example:</strong></p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Teacher: &#8220;The cat sat on the mat.&#8221;</li>

<li>Students: &#8220;The cat sat on the mat.&#8221;</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For more details on repeated reading techniques, check out this <a href="https://www.readingrockets.org/classroom/classroom-strategies/timed-repeated-readings" target="_blank" rel="noopener">resource on repeated reading</a>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Benefits:</strong> Repeated reading helps students improve their word recognition, reading speed, and overall fluency, making them more confident and capable readers.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">2. Reader’s Theater</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Reader’s theater</strong> is a fun and interactive way to practice fluency. Students read scripts adapted from literature, and the emphasis is on reading with expression and proper pacing rather than memorization.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Activity:</strong> <strong>Classroom Reader’s Theater</strong></p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Materials Needed:</strong> Scripts for reader’s theater, props (optional).</li>

<li><strong>Instructions:</strong>
<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li>Select a script suitable for your students&#8217; reading level.</li>

<li>Assign roles to each student, ensuring that everyone has a part to read.</li>

<li>Allow students to practice their parts multiple times.</li>

<li>Encourage students to use expression and gestures while reading their lines.</li>

<li>Perform the script for the class or a small audience.</li>
</ol>
</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Example:</strong></p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Students perform a script based on a favorite storybook, each taking turns to read their lines with expression.</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For more ideas and scripts, explore <a href="https://www.teachervision.com/search/readers+theatre" target="_blank" rel="noopener">this collection of reader’s theater scripts</a>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Benefits:</strong> Reader’s theater makes reading practice engaging and helps students improve their reading expression, pace, and comprehension.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">3. Fluency Phrases</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Fluency phrases</strong> are short, common phrases that students practice reading quickly and accurately. This activity helps students develop automaticity, allowing them to read phrases smoothly without hesitation.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Activity:</strong> <strong>Fluency Phrases Flashcards</strong></p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Materials Needed:</strong> Flashcards with common phrases, a timer.</li>

<li><strong>Instructions:</strong>
<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li>Create flashcards with common phrases (e.g., &#8220;on the mat,&#8221; &#8220;in the car,&#8221; &#8220;a big dog&#8221;).</li>

<li>Show each flashcard to the students and have them read the phrase aloud.</li>

<li>Time how quickly students can read through a set of flashcards.</li>

<li>Repeat the activity, encouraging students to improve their speed and accuracy each time.</li>
</ol>
</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Example:</strong></p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Flashcard: &#8220;a red ball&#8221;</li>

<li>Student: &#8220;A red ball.&#8221;</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For more fluency phrases and activities, visit <a href="https://thisreadingmama.com/reading-fluency-phrasing/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">this guide on building reading fluency</a>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Benefits:</strong> Practicing fluency phrases helps students read common word combinations quickly and accurately, building their overall reading fluency.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">By incorporating these strategies into your daily routine, you’ll help your students develop the fluency they need to become confident, capable readers. Repeated reading, reader’s theater, and fluency phrases are not only effective but also enjoyable ways to enhance your fluency instruction.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I&#8217;m so proud of you for taking the time to learn and better yourself so you can be the best for your students! You are a rockstar reading teacher, friend!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I&#8217;m going to start off with a bold statement&#8230; <strong>STOP wasting time planning and prepping your reading centers and math centers</strong>! Whew&#8230; Ok, I feel a little better. But truly, if the endless hunt for the perfect weekly literacy and math stations is leaving you drained, I want to share <strong>my biggest secret</strong> to literally <strong>cut your planning and prepping time for centers down by at least half</strong>.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="390" src="https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/How-to-PLan-reading-math-centers-in-half-the-time-Header-1024x390.png" alt="" class="wp-image-34507" srcset="https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/How-to-PLan-reading-math-centers-in-half-the-time-Header-1024x390.png 1024w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/How-to-PLan-reading-math-centers-in-half-the-time-Header-300x114.png 300w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/How-to-PLan-reading-math-centers-in-half-the-time-Header-768x292.png 768w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/How-to-PLan-reading-math-centers-in-half-the-time-Header-1536x584.png 1536w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/How-to-PLan-reading-math-centers-in-half-the-time-Header-2048x779.png 2048w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/How-to-PLan-reading-math-centers-in-half-the-time-Header-75x29.png 75w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/How-to-PLan-reading-math-centers-in-half-the-time-Header-100x38.png 100w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/How-to-PLan-reading-math-centers-in-half-the-time-Header-125x48.png 125w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/How-to-PLan-reading-math-centers-in-half-the-time-Header-600x228.png 600w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The first thing we have to consider is how we streamline our process for finding centers that meet the needs of our students while hitting standards. <strong>I highly recommend using a yearlong center curriculum</strong>, and here&#8217;s why.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You&#8217;ve likely found yourself on the hunt on Pinterest, Google, or TeacherPayTeachers scouring the internet for centers week after week. While you are probably finding what you need <em>eventually</em>, <strong>that&#8217;s valuable time being spent each and every week looking for centers</strong> that are engaging and meet your students&#8217; needs. And&#8230; they aren&#8217;t even prepped at this point!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I&#8217;m sure right now you&#8217;re saying, &#8220;sure that sounds great&#8230;. but where the heck do I find a yearlong centers curriculum?&#8221; I&#8217;ve got your back, friend. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Wave goodbye to the stress of searching for engaging, standards-aligned centers week after week. <strong>Say hello to more free time and less hassle</strong>! These center games for the entire year have everything you need (and yes, <strong>students absolutely love playing them</strong>).</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So, now that you are <strong>saving a ton of time by not searching for centers every week</strong> I want to share the next way you&#8217;ll be saving time.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Every center activity in all 4 grade-level bundles is <strong>low prep</strong>. You know those centers that have a million pieces and take hours to laminate and cut so they are prepped? These aren&#8217;t them! Each center is designed to be super low prep and generally <strong>an entire month of activities for both reading and math can be prepped in under an hour</strong>. Throw in some mini erasers from the dollar spot and you save even more time prepping!</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1080" height="1080" src="https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Pre-K-Math-Game-1.png" alt="" class="wp-image-34520" style="width:540px;height:540px" srcset="https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Pre-K-Math-Game-1.png 1080w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Pre-K-Math-Game-1-300x300.png 300w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Pre-K-Math-Game-1-1024x1024.png 1024w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Pre-K-Math-Game-1-150x150.png 150w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Pre-K-Math-Game-1-768x768.png 768w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Pre-K-Math-Game-1-600x600.png 600w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Pre-K-Math-Game-1-75x75.png 75w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Pre-K-Math-Game-1-100x100.png 100w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Pre-K-Math-Game-1-125x125.png 125w" sizes="(max-width: 1080px) 100vw, 1080px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Did you notice how <strong>simple and clear these centers are</strong>? This makes them so easy for students to learn to engage with which <strong>reduces the time you have to spend teaching each center</strong> AND it <strong>dramatically reduces interruptions</strong> while you are running small groups. <strong>Hello win-win all around</strong>!</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="1024" src="https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Second-Grade-Reading-Game-1024x1024.png" alt="" class="wp-image-34524" style="width:512px;height:512px" srcset="https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Second-Grade-Reading-Game-1024x1024.png 1024w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Second-Grade-Reading-Game-300x300.png 300w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Second-Grade-Reading-Game-150x150.png 150w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Second-Grade-Reading-Game-768x768.png 768w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Second-Grade-Reading-Game-600x600.png 600w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Second-Grade-Reading-Game-75x75.png 75w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Second-Grade-Reading-Game-100x100.png 100w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Second-Grade-Reading-Game-125x125.png 125w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Second-Grade-Reading-Game.png 1080w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And, let&#8217;s face it. There is something to be said about consistency. <strong>Kids just do better with a consistent routine and expectations</strong> and incorporating familiar centers each week gives such a sense of calmness during center time.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you&#8217;re lucky enough to have an aid, para or volunteer in your room, they can use the full-page directions that are included to instantly know how to play any of the centers and focus on what really matters &#8211; <strong>giving students the opportunity to practice the skills they have been learning.</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It&#8217;s no secret&#8230; <strong>there is isn&#8217;t enough time in a day for teachers to fit in everything we need to</strong>, especially when it comes to differentiating instruction through small group reading. I feel it to friend, and that&#8217;s where <strong>the need to organize, prioritize and strategize comes into play</strong> so that we can not only plan for small groups, but also ensure they are effective.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Today I&#8217;ll be sharing <strong>4 tips you can start using right away that will help you plan your literacy small groups in less time</strong>.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="390" src="https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/4-tips-to-plan-Small-Group-Literacy-in-less-time-The-Teaching-Texan-1024x390.png" alt="" class="wp-image-32499" srcset="https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/4-tips-to-plan-Small-Group-Literacy-in-less-time-The-Teaching-Texan-1024x390.png 1024w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/4-tips-to-plan-Small-Group-Literacy-in-less-time-The-Teaching-Texan-300x114.png 300w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/4-tips-to-plan-Small-Group-Literacy-in-less-time-The-Teaching-Texan-768x292.png 768w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/4-tips-to-plan-Small-Group-Literacy-in-less-time-The-Teaching-Texan-1536x584.png 1536w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/4-tips-to-plan-Small-Group-Literacy-in-less-time-The-Teaching-Texan-2048x779.png 2048w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/4-tips-to-plan-Small-Group-Literacy-in-less-time-The-Teaching-Texan-75x29.png 75w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/4-tips-to-plan-Small-Group-Literacy-in-less-time-The-Teaching-Texan-100x38.png 100w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/4-tips-to-plan-Small-Group-Literacy-in-less-time-The-Teaching-Texan-125x48.png 125w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/4-tips-to-plan-Small-Group-Literacy-in-less-time-The-Teaching-Texan-600x228.png 600w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><mark style="background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)" class="has-inline-color has-theme-palette-1-color"><strong>Organize Small Group Materials</strong></mark></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One of the best ways to save time when planning and prepping for small groups is to <strong>store all of the materials you frequently use in a central area</strong> &#8211; I like to keep all of mine right next to my small group table.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Guided-Reading-Binder-Organization-The-Teaching-Texan-29-1024x683.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-8189" srcset="https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Guided-Reading-Binder-Organization-The-Teaching-Texan-29-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Guided-Reading-Binder-Organization-The-Teaching-Texan-29-600x400.jpg 600w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Guided-Reading-Binder-Organization-The-Teaching-Texan-29-300x200.jpg 300w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Guided-Reading-Binder-Organization-The-Teaching-Texan-29-768x512.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I call it the &#8220;small group command center,&#8221; and it literally holds ALL THE THINGS. On top I keep a bin for each group where I store the manipulatives, activities, and books we&#8217;ll be using for the upcoming lesson.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In the drawers I store all the extra activities and manipulatives we aren&#8217;t currently using &#8211; think magnetic letters, letter stamps and stamp pads, sounds box cards, etc.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong><mark style="background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)" class="has-inline-color has-theme-palette-1-color">Use Observations and Assessments to Guide Planning</mark></strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">During each small group lesson, I jot down observations and notes about specific kids and the group&#8217;s progress as a whole. Did they get the goal for the lesson? Do they need extra practice with a phonics pattern or heart word? <strong>This is invaluable information for when I set down to plan our next group meeting</strong>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I <strong>keep all of this information (plans and notes) in a <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Teacher-Binder-and-Organization-Toolkit-for-Small-Group-and-Guided-Reading-4291497" target="_blank" rel="noopener">small group reading binder </a>organized by group</strong> so it&#8217;s readily available.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Each time I set down to plan small groups, I start off by referring to these observations from previous lessons as well as baseline assessments as needed.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>This saves times trying to figure out what to focus on because you&#8217;ve already written that information out</strong> in your notes during your previous lesson &#8211; whether it be reviewing a skill or moving on to something else.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong><mark style="background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)" class="has-inline-color has-theme-palette-1-color">Use Templates for Planning Lessons</mark></strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Have you ever heard the phrase, &#8220;don&#8217;t reinvent the wheel&#8221;? It applies to planning small group lessons, too!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Using a template that includes the essential components of each small group session</strong>, such as your warm-up activities, main instructional tasks, and any assessment <strong>saves so much time</strong>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I love using a template like the one on <a href="https://theteachingtexan.com/shop/planners-more/notepads/small-group-reading-notepad/">these small group planning pads</a>. It makes planning so much faster, then I just pop them into my small group reading binder.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You can easily customize these templates based on the specific needs of your students and the learning goals for each session, but you don&#8217;t have to start from ground zero each time.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Trust me when I say that having a structured framework in place will save you time and mental energy</strong>, enabling you to focus on instructional delivery (and your sanity!)</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong><mark style="background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)" class="has-inline-color has-theme-palette-1-color">Incorporate Center Rotations</mark></strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Having students work in small groups at centers is such a powerful way to engage your students in practice with the skills you&#8217;ve been teaching in whole group and small group, and it frees up time so you can continue to deliver direct instruction through small groups.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While one group receives direct instruction from you, other groups work either independently or in collaborative tasks, such as word work, reading centers, or hands-on activities. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>This saves tons of time when you&#8217;re actually teaching small group lessons because you have less interruptions</strong>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As you work with planning small groups you&#8217;ll find little tips and tricks that work for you for saving time, but having some ideas to get started can be such a game changer. I hope that these tips help give you back some of your precious time. If you&#8217;ve got other strategies for planning small groups quickly, drop them in the comments below!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Let&#8217;s start off with a moment of honesty friends&#8230; <strong>Teaching reading in small groups can be challenging!</strong> Behavior management, prepping materials, finding resources, planning, and determining what your other students (who you aren&#8217;t working with currently) will be doing are just the tip of the iceberg.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Throw in having access to limited resources from your school and it quickly starts to feel too overwhelming. Well, friend, today <strong>I want to share some ways we can get creative and still be effective with small group literacy even with minimal resources</strong>. Truthfully, you don&#8217;t all the bells and whistles and tons of STUFF to run them effectively. <strong>You really just need some creativity and effective practices</strong>.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="390" src="https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/How-to-Teach-Small-Group-Reading-with-Limited-Resources-The-Teaching-Texan-1024x390.png" alt="" class="wp-image-32455" srcset="https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/How-to-Teach-Small-Group-Reading-with-Limited-Resources-The-Teaching-Texan-1024x390.png 1024w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/How-to-Teach-Small-Group-Reading-with-Limited-Resources-The-Teaching-Texan-300x114.png 300w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/How-to-Teach-Small-Group-Reading-with-Limited-Resources-The-Teaching-Texan-768x292.png 768w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/How-to-Teach-Small-Group-Reading-with-Limited-Resources-The-Teaching-Texan-1536x584.png 1536w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/How-to-Teach-Small-Group-Reading-with-Limited-Resources-The-Teaching-Texan-2048x779.png 2048w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/How-to-Teach-Small-Group-Reading-with-Limited-Resources-The-Teaching-Texan-75x29.png 75w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/How-to-Teach-Small-Group-Reading-with-Limited-Resources-The-Teaching-Texan-100x38.png 100w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/How-to-Teach-Small-Group-Reading-with-Limited-Resources-The-Teaching-Texan-125x48.png 125w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/How-to-Teach-Small-Group-Reading-with-Limited-Resources-The-Teaching-Texan-600x228.png 600w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong><mark style="background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)" class="has-inline-color has-theme-palette-1-color">Start with a diagnostic assessment.</mark></strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It may seem silly to say, but it&#8217;s worth saying anyway! <strong>Before starting any small group reading instruction, it&#8217;s important to assess your students&#8217; current abilities</strong> &#8211; phonological awareness, letter knowledge, high-frequency words, and decoding are a few of the things I start with at the B.O.Y. and how far we go depends on how the assessments are going. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Rhyming-and-Alliteration-Phonological-Awareness-Assessment-The-Teaching-Texan-1024x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-32444" width="387" height="387" srcset="https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Rhyming-and-Alliteration-Phonological-Awareness-Assessment-The-Teaching-Texan-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Rhyming-and-Alliteration-Phonological-Awareness-Assessment-The-Teaching-Texan-300x300.jpg 300w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Rhyming-and-Alliteration-Phonological-Awareness-Assessment-The-Teaching-Texan-150x150.jpg 150w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Rhyming-and-Alliteration-Phonological-Awareness-Assessment-The-Teaching-Texan-768x768.jpg 768w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Rhyming-and-Alliteration-Phonological-Awareness-Assessment-The-Teaching-Texan-1536x1536.jpg 1536w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Rhyming-and-Alliteration-Phonological-Awareness-Assessment-The-Teaching-Texan-2048x2048.jpg 2048w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Rhyming-and-Alliteration-Phonological-Awareness-Assessment-The-Teaching-Texan-600x600.jpg 600w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Rhyming-and-Alliteration-Phonological-Awareness-Assessment-The-Teaching-Texan-75x75.jpg 75w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Rhyming-and-Alliteration-Phonological-Awareness-Assessment-The-Teaching-Texan-100x100.jpg 100w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Rhyming-and-Alliteration-Phonological-Awareness-Assessment-The-Teaching-Texan-125x125.jpg 125w" sizes="(max-width: 387px) 100vw, 387px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These types of assessments will help you identify students&#8217; strengths and weaknesses, which will inform your teaching strategies. This is super important for all teachers, but especially if you have access to limited resources.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Knowing exactly where your students are and what they need will help you pinpoint the exact resources you will need to help them rather than searching for allll the things!</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong><mark style="background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)" class="has-inline-color has-theme-palette-1-color">Choose the right books (decodable, leveled or other).</mark></strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Once you have identified where your students are, you can select books that are appropriate for their reading abilities. And sometimes, it may be no books at all because you are focusing on other pre-reading skills!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>My go to for most Kindergarten students are decodable readers</strong>. I share more about <a href="https://theteachingtexan.com/the-remarkable-truth-why-every-kindergarten-teacher-should-be-using-decodable-books-to-empower-readers/">why decodable readers are the perfect fit on this blog post</a> and also address my thoughts on leveled texts.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Unvoiced-Consonants-Decodable-Readers-The-Teaching-Texan-8-1024x683.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-32447" width="504" height="336" srcset="https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Unvoiced-Consonants-Decodable-Readers-The-Teaching-Texan-8-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Unvoiced-Consonants-Decodable-Readers-The-Teaching-Texan-8-300x200.jpg 300w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Unvoiced-Consonants-Decodable-Readers-The-Teaching-Texan-8-768x512.jpg 768w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Unvoiced-Consonants-Decodable-Readers-The-Teaching-Texan-8-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Unvoiced-Consonants-Decodable-Readers-The-Teaching-Texan-8-2048x1365.jpg 2048w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Unvoiced-Consonants-Decodable-Readers-The-Teaching-Texan-8-1200x800.jpg 1200w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Unvoiced-Consonants-Decodable-Readers-The-Teaching-Texan-8-75x50.jpg 75w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Unvoiced-Consonants-Decodable-Readers-The-Teaching-Texan-8-100x67.jpg 100w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Unvoiced-Consonants-Decodable-Readers-The-Teaching-Texan-8-125x83.jpg 125w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Unvoiced-Consonants-Decodable-Readers-The-Teaching-Texan-8-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 504px) 100vw, 504px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I&#8217;ve got <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Decodable-Readers-Activities-Lesson-Plans-GROWING-BUNDLE-Science-of-Reading-8941466" target="_blank" rel="noopener">tons of affordable decodable reader options here</a> &#8211; and what is SUPER NICE about these options are <strong>you will have books for all of the readers in your class, can send them home for students to read with families because they&#8217;re just printables, and you can use them year after year by just printing new books</strong>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When you&#8217;ve got limited resources, the last thing you want to do is have to spend time hunting down decodable readers from all over the place of investing tons of money into pre-printed and bound books that limit the number of books you have or what you can do with them.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong><mark style="background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)" class="has-inline-color has-theme-palette-1-color">Bring in shared reading.</mark></strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Shared reading is a collaborative approach to reading where the teacher and students read together and discuss the text. Shared reading can be particularly effective with limited resources because you can <strong>use text book for the entire group</strong>.</p>

</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I love the flexibility that shared reading offers because you can use a text that you print or project and it doesn&#8217;t have to be an entire book! In fact, <strong>I love building these strong habits with <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Seasonal-Shared-Reading-Poems-Bundle-Winter-Spring-Summer-Fall-9426637" target="_blank" rel="noopener">weekly poems</a> that allow students to build these foundational skills in bite-sized chunks!</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Shared reading is the perfect time to focus on building reading fluency, decoding skills, and comprehension.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong><mark style="background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)" class="has-inline-color has-theme-palette-1-color">Incorporate word work during groups and as a center.</mark></strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Last week I shared some <a href="https://theteachingtexan.com/5-ideas-for-word-work-in-a-kindergarten-classroom/">simple and effective ideas for word work in the classroom</a>. Word work activities can help students develop phonics and vocabulary skills, and they can be done using a variety of resources, including word sorts, word walls, and word games. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image">

</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These are perfect for the word work portion of your small group lesson, but can also be used as a center. <strong>We are all about activities that have multiple uses around here!</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Again, you don&#8217;t need all the bells and whistles here. A lot of these activities can be made by just printing them off, using note cards, or <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Kindergarten-Reading-and-Math-Games-GROWING-BUNDLE-4128424" target="_blank" rel="noopener">laminating games that you use year after year</a>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong><mark style="background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)" class="has-inline-color has-theme-palette-1-color">Provide independent reading time.</mark></strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Independent reading is an important part of any reading program, and it can be particularly beneficial for students in small group settings. <strong>I know there are those out there that will say this is a waste of time, but I wholeheartedly disagree.</strong> </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Students need time to interact with books, turn the pages, look at the pictures, find words they know and learn to enjoy books without the context of a lesson format.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I love to incorporate DEAR (drop everything and read) time as a transition back into the classroom after an active time like recess or PE. It only takes a few minutes and allows the students&#8217; bodies to calm while exploring books. It&#8217;s a win-win!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One final cheer for you teacher friend! <strong>You don&#8217;t need lots of THINGS to run effective literacy instruction or small groups</strong>. Do the best with what you have and find inexpensive resources that allow for multiple uses. <strong>You are doing amazing things!</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Hey kindergarten teachers! What are your thoughts on word work activities for your class?</strong> What is word work? Easy to find? Hard to find? Not engaging?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Wherever you are with your teaching journey and incorporating meaningful and engaging word work instruction, today I&#8217;d love to share <strong>5 ideas that you can implement right away</strong> to help your students build a strong literacy foundation.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="390" src="https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/5-IDEAS-FOR-WORD-WORK-IN-A-KINDERGARTEN-CLASSROOM-The-Teaching-Texan-1024x390.png" alt="" class="wp-image-32303" srcset="https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/5-IDEAS-FOR-WORD-WORK-IN-A-KINDERGARTEN-CLASSROOM-The-Teaching-Texan-1024x390.png 1024w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/5-IDEAS-FOR-WORD-WORK-IN-A-KINDERGARTEN-CLASSROOM-The-Teaching-Texan-300x114.png 300w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/5-IDEAS-FOR-WORD-WORK-IN-A-KINDERGARTEN-CLASSROOM-The-Teaching-Texan-768x292.png 768w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/5-IDEAS-FOR-WORD-WORK-IN-A-KINDERGARTEN-CLASSROOM-The-Teaching-Texan-1536x584.png 1536w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/5-IDEAS-FOR-WORD-WORK-IN-A-KINDERGARTEN-CLASSROOM-The-Teaching-Texan-2048x779.png 2048w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/5-IDEAS-FOR-WORD-WORK-IN-A-KINDERGARTEN-CLASSROOM-The-Teaching-Texan-75x29.png 75w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/5-IDEAS-FOR-WORD-WORK-IN-A-KINDERGARTEN-CLASSROOM-The-Teaching-Texan-100x38.png 100w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/5-IDEAS-FOR-WORD-WORK-IN-A-KINDERGARTEN-CLASSROOM-The-Teaching-Texan-125x48.png 125w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/5-IDEAS-FOR-WORD-WORK-IN-A-KINDERGARTEN-CLASSROOM-The-Teaching-Texan-600x228.png 600w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So&#8230; what is word work? <strong>Word work is when we use intentional activities/practice to have our students work with words</strong>. It can include phonetic patterns, heart words (high-frequency words), rhyming words, prefixes/suffixes, etc.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Building Words with Magnetic Letters</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I&#8217;m sharing this one first because it is my go to for word work whether we&#8217;re practicing a particular phonics pattern, heart word, or maybe even tying in some practice with prefixes or suffixes.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There are a ton of ways to use these! Have students read a word from a word card then build it either by the sounds alone or by using the card for a guide. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And bonus, students are using their fine motor skills to manipulate the letters to form words, while also practicing letter recognition, phonemic awareness, and spelling.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Word-Work-Idea-Kindergarten-Magnetic-Letters-The-Teaching-Texan-1024x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-32346" width="447" height="447" srcset="https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Word-Work-Idea-Kindergarten-Magnetic-Letters-The-Teaching-Texan-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Word-Work-Idea-Kindergarten-Magnetic-Letters-The-Teaching-Texan-300x300.jpg 300w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Word-Work-Idea-Kindergarten-Magnetic-Letters-The-Teaching-Texan-150x150.jpg 150w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Word-Work-Idea-Kindergarten-Magnetic-Letters-The-Teaching-Texan-768x768.jpg 768w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Word-Work-Idea-Kindergarten-Magnetic-Letters-The-Teaching-Texan-1536x1536.jpg 1536w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Word-Work-Idea-Kindergarten-Magnetic-Letters-The-Teaching-Texan-2048x2048.jpg 2048w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Word-Work-Idea-Kindergarten-Magnetic-Letters-The-Teaching-Texan-600x600.jpg 600w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Word-Work-Idea-Kindergarten-Magnetic-Letters-The-Teaching-Texan-75x75.jpg 75w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Word-Work-Idea-Kindergarten-Magnetic-Letters-The-Teaching-Texan-100x100.jpg 100w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Word-Work-Idea-Kindergarten-Magnetic-Letters-The-Teaching-Texan-125x125.jpg 125w" sizes="(max-width: 447px) 100vw, 447px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Also worth mentioning, these are a great tool for students who need low investment activities to build confidence because magnetic letters allow for easy adjustments. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Segment and Write</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Another winner in my book because I tie these directly to the phonics pattern and <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Decodable-Readers-Activities-Lesson-Plans-GROWING-BUNDLE-Science-of-Reading-8941466" target="_blank" rel="noopener">decodable reader</a> that we&#8217;ve read in small groups together. Sometimes we just don&#8217;t have time to get to this activity while in small group, so I have students complete it as a center activity.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Students work to identify the word, segment the word into individual sounds using counters, then write the letter/s that represent each sound in their own box. It&#8217;s a super effective and easy way to see which students are retaining the pattern and which need additional practice.</p>

</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You can grab the segment and write templates above inside our <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Decodable-Readers-Activities-Lesson-Plans-GROWING-BUNDLE-Science-of-Reading-8941466" target="_blank" rel="noopener">decodable readers resource on TpT</a> or <a href="https://theteachingtexan.com/shop/resources/decodable-readers/decodable-readers-activities-lesson-plans-growing-bundle-science-of-reading/">right here on our website</a>!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Word Sorts</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Word sorts are a winner because they let you focus on specific spelling patterns and add difficulty as students are ready. Plus they are <strong>SUPER low prep</strong> which is always a winner in my book!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">First choose a specific spelling pattern or set of words to focus on, such as short vowel sounds, words with the letter &#8220;s,&#8221; or words with a certain digraph. Then, provide students with a set of word cards and ask them to sort the cards into groups based on the designated pattern or sound.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Word-Work-Idea-Kindergarten-Word-Sort-The-Teaching-Texan-1024x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-32347" width="463" height="463" srcset="https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Word-Work-Idea-Kindergarten-Word-Sort-The-Teaching-Texan-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Word-Work-Idea-Kindergarten-Word-Sort-The-Teaching-Texan-300x300.jpg 300w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Word-Work-Idea-Kindergarten-Word-Sort-The-Teaching-Texan-150x150.jpg 150w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Word-Work-Idea-Kindergarten-Word-Sort-The-Teaching-Texan-768x768.jpg 768w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Word-Work-Idea-Kindergarten-Word-Sort-The-Teaching-Texan-1536x1536.jpg 1536w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Word-Work-Idea-Kindergarten-Word-Sort-The-Teaching-Texan-2048x2048.jpg 2048w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Word-Work-Idea-Kindergarten-Word-Sort-The-Teaching-Texan-600x600.jpg 600w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Word-Work-Idea-Kindergarten-Word-Sort-The-Teaching-Texan-75x75.jpg 75w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Word-Work-Idea-Kindergarten-Word-Sort-The-Teaching-Texan-100x100.jpg 100w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Word-Work-Idea-Kindergarten-Word-Sort-The-Teaching-Texan-125x125.jpg 125w" sizes="(max-width: 463px) 100vw, 463px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These work perfectly for students to do independently or in pairs. Activities like this not only help students spell common patterns, but they also help students to map the visual representation of sounds with the sound in their brains. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Heart Word Tic Tac Toe</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Want to know <strong>the secret to instant engagement when studying heart words</strong> (or any phonics pattern)? Make it a game!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Heart word tic-tac-toe is as easy to set up as giving students a 3&#215;3 grid or have them make their own on a white board! From there students take turns drawing a heart word (high frequency word) from a basket. The student reads the word aloud and if he/she is correct then he/she writes the word in a space on the play grid. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Word-Work-Idea-Kindergarten-Heart-Word-Tic-Tac-Toe-The-Teaching-Texan-1024x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-32348" width="450" height="450" srcset="https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Word-Work-Idea-Kindergarten-Heart-Word-Tic-Tac-Toe-The-Teaching-Texan-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Word-Work-Idea-Kindergarten-Heart-Word-Tic-Tac-Toe-The-Teaching-Texan-300x300.jpg 300w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Word-Work-Idea-Kindergarten-Heart-Word-Tic-Tac-Toe-The-Teaching-Texan-150x150.jpg 150w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Word-Work-Idea-Kindergarten-Heart-Word-Tic-Tac-Toe-The-Teaching-Texan-768x768.jpg 768w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Word-Work-Idea-Kindergarten-Heart-Word-Tic-Tac-Toe-The-Teaching-Texan-1536x1536.jpg 1536w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Word-Work-Idea-Kindergarten-Heart-Word-Tic-Tac-Toe-The-Teaching-Texan-2048x2048.jpg 2048w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Word-Work-Idea-Kindergarten-Heart-Word-Tic-Tac-Toe-The-Teaching-Texan-600x600.jpg 600w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Word-Work-Idea-Kindergarten-Heart-Word-Tic-Tac-Toe-The-Teaching-Texan-75x75.jpg 75w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Word-Work-Idea-Kindergarten-Heart-Word-Tic-Tac-Toe-The-Teaching-Texan-100x100.jpg 100w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Word-Work-Idea-Kindergarten-Heart-Word-Tic-Tac-Toe-The-Teaching-Texan-125x125.jpg 125w" sizes="(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This not only reinforces reading the word but also accurately spelling the word.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">First to get three in a row wins!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Rainbow Writing</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This word work idea is so widely popular that you&#8217;ve probably already seen it before, but it&#8217;s still fun and effective so it makes the list!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Students using a variety of different colored markers, crayons, or colored pencils to write words on a piece of paper. You can either have students trace the letters of the word first in one color, then trace over them in a different color, creating a rainbow effect OR have them write each letter in a different color creating a rainbow as you look across the word.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img decoding="async" src="https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Word-Work-Idea-Kindergarten-Rainbow-Writing-The-Teaching-Texan-1-1024x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-32350" width="-306" height="-306" srcset="https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Word-Work-Idea-Kindergarten-Rainbow-Writing-The-Teaching-Texan-1-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Word-Work-Idea-Kindergarten-Rainbow-Writing-The-Teaching-Texan-1-300x300.jpg 300w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Word-Work-Idea-Kindergarten-Rainbow-Writing-The-Teaching-Texan-1-150x150.jpg 150w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Word-Work-Idea-Kindergarten-Rainbow-Writing-The-Teaching-Texan-1-768x768.jpg 768w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Word-Work-Idea-Kindergarten-Rainbow-Writing-The-Teaching-Texan-1-1536x1536.jpg 1536w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Word-Work-Idea-Kindergarten-Rainbow-Writing-The-Teaching-Texan-1-2048x2048.jpg 2048w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Word-Work-Idea-Kindergarten-Rainbow-Writing-The-Teaching-Texan-1-600x600.jpg 600w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Word-Work-Idea-Kindergarten-Rainbow-Writing-The-Teaching-Texan-1-75x75.jpg 75w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Word-Work-Idea-Kindergarten-Rainbow-Writing-The-Teaching-Texan-1-100x100.jpg 100w, https://theteachingtexan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Word-Work-Idea-Kindergarten-Rainbow-Writing-The-Teaching-Texan-1-125x125.jpg 125w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This multi-sensory activity helps students with letter formation and recognition, as well as building fine motor skills. Throw in some fun colored or scented markers and students will be begging to go to the rainbow writing center!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As an educator or, heck, even a parent of pre-reading students, it is so incredibly important that we are <strong>working on the RIGHT skills</strong> to help build a strong foundation for later reading success.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So often we get caught in this &#8220;race to read&#8221; which, unfortunately, leads to so many students missing key building blocks for being a skilled reader. So, today lets dive into some of the skills we should be focusing on with students who aren&#8217;t reading, YET.</p>

<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li> Phonological Awareness</li>
</ol>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I feel like this has been in almost all of my recent posts, but phonological awareness is one of the most important things we can work on with our pre-reading (and even reading) students. If you&#8217;ve never seen a visual of the PA continuum before, here&#8217;s a brief overview.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">2.  Letter Knowledge</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It feels like this one may be a no brainer to even say, but one of the foundations of learning to read is the ability to <em>quickly</em> recognize letters and recall the sound they represent.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Let&#8217;s keep this multimodal and engage those senses while we&#8217;re at it! I like to focus on 2 to 3 letters per week (goodbye one letter a week &#8211; that&#8217;ll take you 26 weeks to get through the alphabet)!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Introduce the letter name and sound but also incorporate one of my favorite kinesthetic approaches &#8211; sky writing! </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Have students <strong>use their pointer finger of their dominant hand to sky write each letter, write on their leg, or on a friend’s back.</strong> They can make the shape of the letter with their body either standing up or lying down (if you’re in a big enough space — this makes a good outdoor activity!). This engages the brain in solidifying the formation of each letter. Make sure to remind students and have them repeat the letter they’re practicing out loud as they practice.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And to work on that automatic recognition I love having my students work with an <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Alphabet-Decodable-Readers-Activities-Lesson-Plans-Science-of-Reading-9381193" target="_blank" rel="noopener">alphabet-level decodable reader</a>. They&#8217;re written so the student can focus on a single letter, and they also build vocabulary as they name each picture!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These are perfect for helping students associate a sound with the written symbol that represents it, and they feel SO proud of themselves for beginning to read! <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Alphabet-Decodable-Readers-Activities-Lesson-Plans-Science-of-Reading-9381193" target="_blank" rel="noopener">You can grab a set for yourself right here</a>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Read more about <a href="https://theteachingtexan.com/building-blocks-of-reading-letter-knowledge/">letter knowledge here</a>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">3.  Print Awareness</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Print awareness centers on how to interact with books. Things like&#8230; where is the front/back cover? Where is the title? Where is the top or bottom of the page? How do you turn the pages?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Even though the students we are focusing on today aren&#8217;t ready to read words in a text, <strong>they are ready to handle books and to learn how to interact with them</strong>. This is a wonderful opportunity to teach them how to &#8220;read&#8221; pictures and tell the story themselves using illustrations.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Remember those <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Alphabet-Decodable-Readers-Activities-Lesson-Plans-Science-of-Reading-9381193" target="_blank" rel="noopener">alphabet decodable readers</a> I referred to what I talked about letter knowledge? Your gonna hit a two for one here because they are not only appropriate for building a strong letter knowledge foundation, but they also give students experience with interacting with a book!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">4. Vocabulary</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>A strong vocabulary is essential for reading comprehension</strong>. How do we build a robust vocabulary with young students?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Well friend, you probably already guessed that it had to do with lots of exposure to hearing books read aloud! That alone is going to open up the door for young students to hear a vast array of language, but lets take it a step further&#8230;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Bring in the nonfiction texts for building vocabulary</strong>! Not only do nonfiction texts teach academic vocabulary within context, they are also often supported by engaging illustrations that help our younger readers form meaningful connections to the meaning of the word.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">5.  Listening Comprehension</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is another area I feel like so many teachers do innately before students are reading on their own, but having some targeted skills you are focusing on his helpful. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We know that the goal of reading is to comprehend or understand what we&#8217;ve read, but these skills actually start to develop BEFORE we ever read a text on our own. <strong>Comprehension skills start to develop through listening to stories and then having discussions</strong>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">What comprehension skills can we work to develop? Things like retelling a story, identifying the beginning/middle/end, asking and answering questions about the text that was read, and making connections to the text and their own experiences or even another text.</p>
