Wordless Wednesday: Summer Reading

· · · · ·
I just finished my first book for the summer!  I read “The Daily 5” by “the sisters.”  It was a great for reflecting on things that went well during reading centers/guided reading last year, and it was also awesome to grab a few more tidbits to make reading centers even more successful next year.  I really want to focus on helping my first graders become more independent!
Now that I’ve finished my first book…
On to book number 2!
As you can see, I am sticking with the reading theme for my next book!  I have heard such GREAT things about “The Book Whisperer,” and I can’t wait to get started!
I know a lot of us have summer reading plans.  So, what is one thing that you’ve learned that you feel other teachers should know?

My tidbit from “The Daily 5” may seem common sense, but I had never really thought about it this way.  The sisters recommend seating kiddos who will have problems working independently in specific areas of the classroom into those areas when practicing Daily 5.  This gives them a chance to do it correctly in that specific area.  Pretty smart if you ask me.  If the kiddo has been successful there before (even for those 3 minute practice sessions), there’s a better chance of it happening again in the future.

  1. I've got to read the Book Whisperer as well…it's been hanging out with me for over a year now. From Richard Allington – Let kids read what they WANT to read, not you tell them to read.

  2. I just finished The Book Whisperer! It was fantastic. My biggest takeaway was if you want kids to be lifelong readers, just let them read! Have time in class for children to read material they want to read. Enjoy!

    1. I haven't heard of that one. I'll have to check it out once I get done with my next couple that I have planned. I need to build in time for just "fun" reading too, haha

    1. I wish I had a copy of the newer version. I bought the old version at the beginning of the school year and just never had time/motivation/energy to read it. I couldn't bring myself to buy another copy of it. If you read the first version, is the new one much different?

  3. Thanks for stopping by my blog! I just wanted to let you know that you are a "no-reply blogger" which means when people receive your comment through email, they can't respond to you because your email isn't present. If you google "no-reply blogger" you can find tutorials to change your settings. ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. I think what Daily 5 has done for me…is "give myself permission" for kiddos to CHOOSE…I was trained ( MANY MANY years ago…to stand up front & teach!) It has taken A LOT to let it go! ( I know…FROZEN in my house) But I am…:) Wendy 1stgradefireworks
