How to Plan a Publishing Party That Will Actually Wow Students

01/15/2017

Lucy and I have a love-hate relationship.  Lucy Caulkins that is.  While I adore her theory and many of her ideas for structuring Writers Workshop, I often feel it can become a bit monotonous, especially for Kindergarten students.  This feeling often grows during those few lessons leading up to ... read more

Guided Reading with Finn Books

04/21/2016

Guided reading, reader's workshop, The Daily 5 - however you structure reading in your classroom, the end goal (promoting literacy skills) remains constant. Fountas & Pinnell describe guided reading as "scaffolded reading instruction that propels all students toward confident, independent ... read more

First Day, Back to School Fun

08/30/2015

Howdy friends! Do you get first day jitters?  I know that I do, but something happens right when that first little friend walks in.  The "teacher instinct" kicks in and it's all about getting the little ones settled and starting to learn about them.  The focus finally shifts from ... read more

The Teaching Texan

A big celebration is in order for tonight! But in order to tell you what we’re celebrating, I have to be completely open with you...⁣
🔹⁣
The week before Thanksgiving Dustin was let go from his job unexpectedly. Needless to say that trying to find a position in the corporate world during the holidays was next to impossible. ⁣
🔹⁣
We never expected to be thrust into “living” off of my teacher salary. As we all know, we didn’t go into the profession for the $$$. We had to make a lot of difficult decisions and it has been an incredibly stressful 3 months. ⁣
🔹⁣
We were honestly to the point where we had to look at moving away from Dallas and/or Texas in order to help Dustin get back into his field. ⁣
🔹⁣
A lot of you reached out asking if I was OK because I’ve been so absent from social media. This has definitely played a big role in that because I’ve had to take on a bit more in our personal life than I had before. ⁣
🔹⁣
Today we get to celebrate Dustin submitting a signed offer with an amazing company! It’s been a long road, but we know everything happens for a reason!⁣
🔹⁣
I hope that by being real and open with you that it helps show I’m real, too. Nobody is immune to anything, and we all experience struggles in life. With continued PUSH we make it through and come out the other side stronger!

Call me Builder Bryce! 🏗 Today we got to take a hard hat tour of our new school that’s under construction. It’s so amazing to see inside a construction site and get a glimpse at where our kids will learn next year. Has anyone ever gone through a move to a new building? Now it’s a 4 day weekend and this teacher is THANKFUL on so many levels! ... See MoreSee Less

Publishing Party day is one of my favorites! Taking a moment to celebrate each student’s hard work and growth makes the work even more worth it. ⁣
✏️ ⁣
Today I went super simple. Pre-popped Skinny Pop popcorn divided into bags and the choice to add-in a few skittles or kisses. Not only is it an easy treat, it helps keep friends quite and respectful while listening to each student’s writing. WINNING!⁣
✏️ ⁣
Sometimes we have parents come in for our parties, but today was just us. Parents will see all of this hard work at conferences in a couple weeks!⁣
✏️⁣
If you’re looking for other Publishing Party ideas, I have several posts on my blog that are perfect for you! Up next we will be working on Fairy Tales, and we’re super excited to get started!

The Teaching Texan

As we head into a new week remember this. YOU are in control of your life and what you make of it. There are so many naysayers out there (sometimes we can be one to ourself) that will tell you that can’t. You know what I do what I hear those words? I smile and say, “watch me.” I’ll be darned if I allow someone’s small mind to influence mine or keep me from my dreams. Cheers to a great week! ... See MoreSee Less
